Complex Energy Systems

Excellent applied research requires well-grounded scientific fundamentals which need to be developed in time to be prepared for new paths.

The experts of the research team “Complex Energy Systems” elaborate – under the guidance of AIT Principal Scientist Peter Palensky – methods for modeling and optimizing highly complex energy systems.
This requires a consistent theory with flexible system boundaries that unifies the following domains:

  • Continuous aspects (e.g. energy infrastructure of generation, transport/distribution and demand),
  • Discrete aspects (e.g. information technology like distributed digital control and communication),
  • Behavioral aspects (e.g. roles, rules and agents on markets, game theory), and
  • Statistical aspects (e.g. the weather or aggregated user behavior)

The gained findings lead to important research questions and potential solutions in the area of future energy systems.
